“Leaf & Circle”

An Innovative Exhibit by Artist Jessica Baker
At the Prospect Park Audubon Center

April 5 – May 26, 2008

Artist’s Reception Open to the Public: April 26, from 5 – 8 p.m.

Brooklyn, NY - Leaf & Circle is the culmination of an ambitious project begun in the fall of 2007, during which artist Jessica Baker collected leaves from Prospect Park and locations throughout Brooklyn. Her initial idea to print directly on the leaves is a natural outgrowth from her work for many years as a printmaker, and in particular from her interest in the powerful archetype of the circle. The combination of leaves and circles has resulted in this unique series of single and multiple leaf print arrangements, as well as leaf arrangements with no prints on them at all. These will be displayed on the second floor of the landmark Prospect Park Beaux Arts Boathouse, which is home the Park’s Audubon Center.

What is compelling about Baker’s work is how she has utilized a resource from her immediate environment - leaves - that are free and plentiful and would otherwise be left to naturally decompose. The finished leaves have a limited “life span.” Dried leaves and flowers have been known to last for more than a 100 years, but eventually decomposition will set in. Baker says, “A leaf that has fallen from a tree in November captures a moment in the growth and life cycle of a tree, and the transient beauty inherent in the inexorable march of the leaf from birth to death.”

Leaf & Circle is at once poetic and intellectual, reflecting the underlying multidimensional talent of the artist, and her creative use of natural materials familiar to anyone who has admired Prospect Park’s colorful fall foliage.

About the Artist: Jessica Baker lives and works in Brooklyn, where she pulls all of her own prints on a table-top etching press in her artist studio.
