Alaska Residency Artwork
This artwork was created during a one-month residency at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in Skagway, Alaska in the spring of 2003. I was drawn to the indigenous art of the Southeast Alaskan Interior and used native imagery in much of the artwork created. In the four-panel, multiple configuration painting “Four Eyes” as well as the work on paper "Perspective", I used the Tklingit symbol representing both the eye and the joints of the body. I was also inspired by the independent spirit of the women who had the courage to brave the harsh conditions of Alaska in search of adventure, a new home and, of course, gold, and created my first photo collage, “Gold Rush Women” with photos culled from the park’s photo archives.
